How Did I Go from Rookie to Top Sales Producer?
I walked into my new sales job fresh out of college with no leads, no clients, no reputation, and no idea how to sell—just a desk, a phone, and a $1 million sales quota. This was my reality when I started in AdTech sales eight years ago as a 23-year-old.
Today I'm managing over $80 million in digital media revenue as my company’s top-grossing salesperson (out of 100+) for the third year in a row. I was not good at first. I sounded robotic, would cut off customers, and listened to reply instead of to understand. I simply did not know how to sell, and the company didn’t teach me how. I had to learn completely on my own.
With each meeting, I got better, but I still hadn’t closed any new business by my six-month mark. I thought maybe I made a mistake, and this wasn’t for me. Then I remembered what my mentor told me: “It’s easy to be enthusiastic on day one, but it’s six months in when people learn if they really want to be in sales or not.” I decided to keep going.
